A lot of us knew Mr Harris from older brothers and sisters, but to the rest us: this is all we knew about him: “He’s sooooo funny and nice!”, “Mr Harris coming?! Yay!”  “He is really great!” And he was really awesome. Mr Harris used to teach at our school, and taught 4th grade with Ms. Gartside. He came to do two plays for us at the assembly. But he needed actors, so who did he chose… us! We did the two Native American tales: The turtle and the bear (kind of like the turtle and the hare) and how the birds got their feathers. The turtle and the bear was about a bear who was very full of himself. He thought he was the tallest, the strongest and the fastest. At first no one disagreed, but when he got to the part about being the fastest a little head popped out of the lake. It was a turtle, and the turtle said the SHE was the fastest. So they decided they should have a race and the turtle won! But after everyone had gone, she revealed that she had tricked bear. The bear was so angry that he had lost he went to sleep and didn’t wake up until spring. From this day on, bears still sleep during the winter, maybe so that they can forget their race with turtle. Turtle may not have been fast in her legs, but she was very fast in her mind. Everybody really liked it. How the birds got their feathers was about a time when birds had no feathers. The creator decided to help. He told them to send up a bird to get a the clothes. The buzzard was chosen. He flew up to the heavens, but could not decide which one clothes he wanted himself. He gave everyone else the others, thinking that the next one would be better, but ended up getting the worst! They were both really fun to act. We can’t find the pictures now but check our blog later to see them!

Hi world -

Welcome to the blog of 5A! We are going to write about what we are learning and thinking about in our class. We are 5th graders living in New York City. This year we are going to be studying the ancient civilizations of China and Greece. First we are learning about how archaeologists learn about life in the past by examining artifacts.

There are only 12 students in our class – it’s probably the smallest class in our school! We have a small classroom though, so we wouldn’t fit many more kids in! This year our teacher is trying out some new things – one is a standing desk that has a swing bar. If you are a fidgety type of kid you would probably really like it. You can be swinging your leg while you are doing your work, and you wouldn’t be distracting anyone else. Something else we are trying out this year are yoga balls. We have 3 in our room, and we can switch our regular chair for the yoga ball.

Please come back and read more about what we are doing!
